Learning Horn Crafting

My son Christian asked me about making powder horns and I invited him to learn how I shape a horn. He worked almost three hours in the shop with a bit of guidance on design and tool use (rasps, files and knife) and turned out a nice powder horn. I hope he continues to show interest!

Thanks Rich- I had already made and installed the base plug (which will be another learning session for him), so he had the throat, ring and nozzle to do. Christian showed good tool control and really good attention to detail.

 Nice work, the product of good/knowledgeable instruction and the will to learn. I doubt seriously this will be the last we see from him. I look forward to seeing more.

He deserves to have that big smile. That is a very nice powder horn he crafted from a cow 's horn. I would be delighted to see some of his future work. Please keep posting.

Thanks mortarman- well maybe not completely stopped making dulcimers, though they have taken back seat for a while. (After about 130 or so Dulcimers I just needed a change, and all things Black Powder and Early Americana are a love).
I do hope Christian continues to show interest and I will continue encouraging him in horn work or anything to use and grow his good skills. If he’s up to it I will share his future work here 🙂
