first time using scrapers
« on: July 23, 2024, 06:07:19 PM »
Just got my first set of scrapers and was able to "sharpen " them after watching you tube vids on how to. I'm very pleased ( nice micro curls of wood ;D)but have a question do you need to fallow up with sandpaper or do you apply finish after scrapping (or do you burnish with an antler/ hard wood)

Burnishing  I'd expect. No paper needed if done well.

The scrapers would replace the sandpaper - just keep them sharp.

Scrape, stain, (some will scrape back again then stain again), burnish, then finish in that order. Burnish after staining especially if using water-based acids that'll raise the wood fibers. Dowel rods or hickory ramrod scraps work well...deer antler if it's smooth enough. Burnishing done well makes for a sweet-looking authentic gun. Kibler has a good video out there on this.

Using a hard Arkansas stone and oil polish all three sides of the scraper to a mirror finish before using a polished carbide dowel and oil to roll the edge and sandpaper won’t be needed.
