red maple with curl

what's the best way to get red maple to show the curl and a  a reddish/brown finish

I've tried several mtn loral colors on my cut offs but want more pop of the curl

Start with a base toner. I use Transtint honey amber mixed 1 to 6 parts water. Apply and let it dry. You’re going to get an awful yellow color. This will give the lighter curl some color golden background to the darker curl. As for the main color, I like to experiment with combinations of acid and alcohol based products.
Each stick of wood is different.

Ferric nitrate. But, it will only bring out contrast in the curl that is already there.
Also, the curl won’t show too much till you put a finish on it.
Wet it for a preview.
