Barrel makers who have spent many years working together. I wonder how long it took a master barrel maker to train his blacksmithing partner?

Making a single product day in and day out, it wouldn’t take a very long time to become highly proficient.

Thanks, Bob.  A good look at an old tradition.

In England W Greener tells that until the fire was right they made trade barrels for the foreign market. Then once the fire was right they would start on the high quality barrels.
But the machine made Damascus put most of the forgers out of work in the later 19th c. After some riots…
Great video.

These are skills pretty much lost to modernity. I was amazed how they could write a name in the barrel by manipulating the twists and bends of the metal as they hand forged it. Just amazing stuff.

Cant imagine why such techniques would ever fall to the wayside... ;D

I did like the 'scraper' at about 18 minutes.  Getting full use out of a military bayonet!

There are Damascus knife makers that can make letters or images like a game bird in a bar.
The name in the Damascus was done by others as well.

I really enjoyed that video. Master Craftsmen at work. It would be neat to have heard them explain exactly what they are doing and why, what they are looking for as they work the steel.

I've tried to watch the video twice. The mudi  keeps putting me go sleep. They never get started.
Maybe I'm over tired?
