Any thoughts on this stock blank?
« on: August 07, 2024, 11:00:24 PM »
So, I found this blank I picked up from AM years ago in the back of the shop and (not being a gun builder of any skill whatsoever) I am confused about the wood. Seems to be Maple to me. Sugar Maple? What do you guys think? It almost looks like Poplar to me.

Sharpen up your carving tools, and stock up on antacids. It’s beautiful wood, but I’ve carved stone that is whole lot easier. Good Luck.

Yeah, first thought was red oak, but for sure, ash. Similar  charateristics. Made good bows of each.

I love sugar maple, but a good piece of ash will surely turn my head.
Way to go Al, Let a nice one get away.

Hmm..looks to me like that would make a very interesting, and very handsome rifle.
How would one go about staining it…..What stain would be appropriate ? A light stain?? Or something to darken it ?

I love working with ash and I love the look of the grain when finished! Not sure what it will be yet, but I'm looking forward to it.
