Newly finished Jaeger
« on: July 14, 2024, 05:36:34 PM »
This Jaeger was finish assembled and test fired on Thursday. It may be of interest in that it has some nice features. My customer expressed a desire for a short barreled hunting rifle of somewhat plain decoration. We decided on a 26 inch long, 58 caliber gain twist barrel by Bob Hoyt with a swamped profile borrowed from an original. An unadorned 11740s lock by Chris Laubach (he has a new batch of locks in progress) was a perfect choice for style and function. The triggers are a set made for me by Alaska Arms (CNC machined) . The stock is English Walnut from a local source that had two sections of sap wood that completely removed after shaping. The mounts are the first time application of a set of moulds I made from an original that I obtained last year.  I had planned the carving to be smaller sections and somewhat simpler in design.

Fine example of a muzzle loading hunting rifle. Are the triggers multi lever as made by watch makers or the simpler two lever style?
I made a tiny screw for one of these multi lever Swiss triggers years ago and the German owner told me these were made by watch makers in the French speaking section of Switzerland.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Great job Ron. The photos do not do it justice. Looks much better in person, and the balance is excellent. The customer should be very pleased!

I like it. It is not over the top like some of the guns made for the nobility.

I really like that sight with standing and 1 folding leaf.
That is all that is really needed on most hunting rifles.
