Wm. Hawken rifle
« on: August 24, 2024, 04:03:18 AM »
Just a few pics of an interesting project I recently finished for a customer.  A version of the William Hawken rifle that was posted on YouTube and the I love muzzleloading website by Ethan Yazel. The rifle was built using a 40 inch long 15/16 inch Rice barrel in 50 cal. The lock is an original Goulcher lock that I replaced the original internals. The original internals were preserved and are kept with the rifle. Several shop made parts on the gun. The wrist repair and the silver cheek inlay of the original were omitted on this version at the customer's request. A big thank you to Ethan for posting this rifle. His video and detailed description were immensely valuable in helping this project come to fruition.

Interesting rifle.
I do question about replacing the original internals though, of the lock.
I have an original John Blissett cap lock I would not hesitate to use, given the opportunity. It's internals are wonderful pieces of kit.

The original internals were not equipped with a fly to work with the double set triggers. So instead of modifying them I replaced them with internals with a fly. The original internals can simply be reinstalled if one ever wishes to return the lock to its original status.

Say now! Wow!! So glad the video was useful, I’ve always hoped someone could use them for a build, but havnt seen one yet. This is so great!!

Gotta give thanks to Seth I. here on the forum. He and his team to a ton of work to make the videos doable for me.

I thought that one looked familiar. This is the original (click to enlarge):

Hi Seth, that's not the exact gun I copied. If you go to Ethan's website I Love Muzzleloading or his YouTube channel you can find both pictures and his video he did on the particular William Hawken that was the inspiration for this build.
