Beck inspired pistol.
« on: August 27, 2024, 03:14:57 AM »
Something I wanted to do for awhile, was recreate the JP Beck Pistol. It was a fun little project adorned in sterling silver. It is not a bench copy but as close as I could get with hardware I could find. Trigger is forged. Barrel is a Bobby Hoyt .50, the lock is old stock Hollenbaugh/Ditchburn at 4.2x .77 it’s small. Stock is a piece of rock hard curly red maple. Hand made/hand finished imperfections are part of the beauty😉  Comments and criticism is welcomed👍

Wood was finished in Aqua fortis, Becks Oil, and Becks Wax.

Build time is approximately 40 hours, hand tools only, over about 10 days.

BTW: I made the cutting board too🤣

VERY nicely finished JD.
Had you tapered the octagonal section would have made it even better  aesthetically. I do not know the pistol you recreated, or whether or not it's octagonal section was tapered with smaller wedding bands.
It does appear slightly tapered. I just thought the step a wee bit bold.

A fine looking pistol. J. P. would have been proud.

This is the original I was referencing. Yeah tapered would have been nice. I’ll keep that in mind next time👍

Very cool looking pistol! The sterling silver pieces give the pistol some nice character.

JD that's very cool. (And this one isn't behind glass so you can go shoot it!)

Your pistol looks great.

Is that lock still available?  I sent an email to a website I found, but so far no response.

Can you tell me where I could buy that lock?

Very nice indeed! Where did you get the silver furniture? There was a guy in Mt. Pleasant Mi.  who had boxes of cast silver Beck pistol mounts he got from Wm. Buchele's estate. I bought a bunch of Buchele's maple stocks from him.

(update) He was on this forum (Jamned) until he passed away in 2021.

Chris Evard bought the lock company. He has a posting on this forum about it “”Ditchburn/ JP lock” he will be CNC ing them.

Thank you for all the kind words. This forum is an absolute treasure, and those willing to share their experience I cannot thank enough. I did gray the lock and barrel with some slight patina on them and the wood finish. So far I’m very happy with the finished item.

I’ll be shooting it here soon!
