Need help deciding on buying a Hacker Martin pistol
« on: June 07, 2024, 11:35:49 PM »
Found a nice small percussion Hacker Martin (stamped on barrel and lock) at a local gun store. the pistol is in very good shape well taken care of; they are asking $700.  Did some research and prices are all over the place so I thought I would get your opinion.  Don't have pictures at this time.  Thanks for the input.  steg49

That is what I'm asking, for some help from experienced collectors, their opinion on value. If this is out of line let me know and I will remove the thread.  You folks back east see a lot more of these than we do in the west.  Thanks  steg49

Buy it! If you don’t, p/m me and I’ll send you the funds and you can buy it for me!!
Is that enough of an incentive? If it’s the real thing then I would put around $1500.00 on it. Picture would help.

Don't matter what the internet says it is worth. Would you rather have the pistol, or have $700? That is all that matters.

Buy it! Own a piece of muzzleloading history! It would make a perfect heirloom!

Hacker Martin was making muzzle loaders before the interest in them started to simmer a bit. Major Ned Roberts visited him and wrote about him in his book called "The Muzzle Loading Cap Lock Rifle". I have E,M.Farris's copy he gave to me in the 1950's and it's a great read.
He apparently made some of his own locks. The one I saw in a gun shop in Milton WVa had a hand made lock that needed some work and I did what ever was needed.

Just buy it. 700 is chicken feed for something like this.

Update, I did not read far enough. Congratulations. As a friend of mine said when I bought back a BPCR I had built for myself in 1989 and then sold a few years later “You stole it”.

WORTH is a determination between a willing seller and a willing buyer. I remember when Hacker Martin was a "big"name in muzzle loading rifles and I remember the lock on the one Johnny Morris had in his gun shop in Milton WVa and it was poor quality from the day it was made.It also had a brass plate and I am not sure if this pistol was NOT that same gun.Too many years have staggered by.
