Midwest Powder Measure with Hunter, Dog & Deer
« on: November 14, 2024, 03:31:58 AM »
I have collected Tansel powder horns for many years, and one of the frequently reoccurring themes is a hunting dog chasing one or more deer, often with a hunter with rifle nearby, or at times with an Indian with bow & arrow nearby. This powder measure has the same theme, dog chasing deer with hunter, very similar in design, but scratch carved like scrimshaw in the antler tine, rather than carved as on the horns. But it so closely resembled the Tansel theme of deer hunting in the Midwest it just had to come home with me a couple weeks ago. I'd like to think it was influenced by the owner seeing a Tansel powder horn and mimicking the deer-dog-hunter scene. The owner's name appears to be W. C. Lee on the measure's back side. But regardless, it's a very nice powder measure, about 5 inches long, old and dirty inside, and a nice addition to my Midwest powder horns.

The scratched in scene is definitely fun, but what I really love about the measure is the shape of the tine with it's flat sides and wavey curves. Very nice piece.
