English lock and other parts on a rebuilt flintlock
« on: November 19, 2024, 04:19:46 AM »
A friend found a musket made of recycled parts maybe 200 or more years ago. It was dropped and the pan broke off. He is going to get it repaired. But the question is...the lock is only 6 inches long and brown bess locks are like 7 inches long. Also the trigger guard is identical to a 1st or second model bess but no hole for a swivel. The side plate is from a 1st model. The barrel is English and only about 69 caliber. It has proof marks. About 36 inches long. There is a wrist escutcheon. Anybody know what gun has such a lock and trigger guard?

Hi,
We need better photos of more of the gun.  It could be one of the numerous carbines issued, which usually had locks about 6" long.

I looked in one of my books, and it appears to be parts from a pattern 1756 light dragoon carbine. But it is definitely a somewhat crudely restocked gun. No nose cap, no beavertail carved on the stock. Forearm is kind of skimpy... Butt plate is close to that of a 1st model brown bess. He bought the gun at a flea market in North Carolina

If it was originally set up for a carbine sling bar the convex sideplate will have a notch.

The side plate has no notch and it is too big to put two screws into the lock. It is probably from a 1st model bess. Only one screw was put in the lock and a wood screw was in the front of the side plate. So i believe this was put together mainly from a 1756 light carbine using the barrel, lock, trigger guard , butt plate, ramrod guides ...and side plate from a 1st model brown bess.

I had a single that a member  here has now, that has furniture one size down but same otherwise as a brown Bess.

That gun is actually a rifled piece that came from Montrose in Scotland.

Above gun has a Germanic looking lock and octagonal barrel.
