Museum of the Fur Trade bison horn
« on: December 28, 2024, 05:50:57 PM »
I’d like to make a close copy of this powderhorn, but I can’t figure out the tip is completed. It appears to be a screw tip of some sort, but I can’t see the end to know if it has a drilled hole and is simply missing the stopper, or if it’s a solid turned piece that must be unscrewed to get power out of the horn. Any thoughts on this?
Thanks for any insights you all might have…
-Steve

I suggest that the screw tip is about 3" long and that the plug is missing from the hole in the tip.

It could be drilled through the top.  The different material at the base of the tip might indicate that it is detachable at that point.  Could be a screw tip or friction?

Taylor, my thoughts too. It just seemed like a looong ways to drill! The label next to the horn says it’s a screw tip. Should be a fun project

Screw tip, missing the plug.  If that is the horn I'm thinking of it has internal threads on the main body of the horn (the tip screws into the horn).

Question, I thought I read once the Eastern Buffalo had a smaller horn and lighter in color. Is that true and could this be from an eastern buffalo.? I like the shape of this horn. I've done several buffalo horn but never like the chunky look they had.
