I build picnic tables and benches. I use Min Wax on all of them. They are left outside all year long uncovered. I doubt any Longrifle will take that kind of abuse. The only issue I see is some fading from the sun. But Min Wax isn't an H.C. finish. JMHO
I’ve used Minwax a lot myself. Just never on a gunstock. My concern mostly is whether it might be compatible with an oil finish. Fading is also an issue for me but secondary to making sure I can get oil into the wood pores to help seal it. As for abuse I agree the only difference is we’re dealing with thinner stock and any swelling or movement on a picnic table or bench doesn’t really affect it like even minor movement,the long rifle stock can be drastic.
