collectors question
« on: January 01, 2025, 08:17:38 PM »
Happy New Year guys!

I am just curious, for those of you that have a large collection of flint long guns, how often do you service them to make sure they don't rust on the shelf or safe? I only have a few but even if I don't shoot them, I try to inspect them and run an oiled patch down the bore maybe twice a year. For the bigger collections, do you have a rotation so you are not spending your whole life doing this chore?

I’d be cleaning and oiling all the time. I have a wood lined walk in vault. My home is climate controlled with forced air geothermal. I don’t have any humidity issues, even living along a creek.

I live in a pretty low humidity location, so the risk is low. When I inspect my stored long guns, I rarely have issue, but sometimes I do and am glad I check...  I kind of enjoy the experience too. I try and do the same for my modern pieces. Thanks, as I was curious how others do this.

Every winter when the snow hits. I go through my collection and do an inspection and oil my guns. I have a stack of 3x5 cards to list them on. I will head each card, such as "Flintlock rifles 2025" and then list each one with actual date I clean and oil them such as "Birdseye Tenn. .32 2/10".  Expecting 18-21  :o inches of snow Sunday, I know where I will be!....LK

Part of my shooting is regularly inspecting my firearms monthly - oil if needed many are on display in the house .
