anyone use a .40 gain twist
« on: January 03, 2025, 03:39:57 AM »
Looking to the next build thinking of a small cal .40 but in gain twist rifling.
Awhile back I believe  Brad at cabin creek said some shooters were liking the 40 cal but in gain twist rifling (I like the 50 &54 in gain) do to a very flat /fast shooting round.
So looking for any 40 gain twist shooters

Hi recurve, I don,t have any gain twist barrels but have thought about it. I,m curious how much gain you have in the ones you do have.  As twist rate at breech and muzzle. When you order a barrel can you specify the twist rate and gain ? :-\

I had an antique barrel rebored and rifled by Bob Hoyt many years ago. It was bored to .40 and rifled in gain twist, 1/60 to 1/40. It was very accurate, shot many a squirrel and won many shoots in the early '80,s. I would shoot 40 grains for targets and squirrels and up to 60 for long range work.  My 13 year old son split 10 balls in a row with it at one shoot. Still have it. ....LK

I'm not sure I just leave it to Mr Bobby Hoyt  but I believe its 96 at breach and 48(or 46) at muzzle
here are 2 barrels gain twist one rebore and a hoyt made (brown) I was so happy with the 54s I had him make a 38 inch swamped barrel in 50
https://americanlongrifles.org/forum/Themes/default/images/bbc/move.gif
I get great groups with round balls and found it flatten out the groups at 100 . my other hoyt barrels.50 1-56 sighted in at 75 are high at 50 and low at 100
with gain .50 I sighted in at 50 a little high at 75 1 1/2 inch low at 100. all with the same ball patch and powder 3f swiss (65-80 grains depending on what the barrel likes)

what sold me at first was visiting Mr Hoyts shop and seeing a photo of a younger Mr Hoyt with an elk and sense I was there to get a 50 rebored to 54 for my son in Co for elk, I asked "what do you use to hunt elk"  His response was a 54 in gain twist because it shoots flatter and hits harder , and you can shoot round ball and conical out of the same barrel (his elk was taken with a great plains bullet in 54)
so I got my sons barrel and had him make me one in 54 gain(very happy with them)

with research I found that mr Henry Pope a famed barrel maker1800s stated that gain twist - page 24 of the book THE MUZZLELOADING CAP LOCK RIFLE
"insist that the gain twist is absolutely the best , and give the most accurate shooting"  I believe that it 96 at breach and 46(or 48) at muzzle but you need to ask Bobby

with that being said  all my Hoyt barrels shoot great a one hole group at 50
colerain has info on gain twist on their sight,  cabin creeks Brad has made some rifles in gain also

My double barreled Slotterbek rifle is .40 cal. Gain twist in both barrels. Old Charley swore by gain twist.
