Mail order blank sources
« on: January 04, 2025, 12:19:45 AM »
I am planning and gathering parts for a LR build.  I need a square blank.  Where should I source that?  Are they getting delivered in good condition these days?

In the past I have received wood that was shipped with a label taped to the wood, no packaging.  Some of them got bused up.

Thanks,
Scot

Tom Fornicola or Allen Martin, depending on which one has what you need in stock.  I have personally done several deals with Tom and have always been more than happy.  Allen is trustworthy and has some great wood too....  so there you go!

I am looking for high quality maple for a long rifle.

I got some square half sock blanks from Dunlap years ago.  They just mailed them as chunks of wood with no package.

Scota, when you say "square", are you literally meaning that you are buying a rectangle of wood, or are you just saying that it hasn't been pre-carved at all. All of the blanks I have ever bought had square corners, but the blank was sawed roughly into the shape of a hockey stick. All those I have personally sawn out trees were also prepared that way, so as to try to reduce the potential for checking as much as possible.

Yes square edges, no in letting, roughly stock shaped.
