Second rifle from a blank: a progress thread

I would change the lock and side plate panels. Too long in the front and wonky because of the down turns in the back unless you’re doing a Rowan School gun. That box looks Deep River which is in conflict with Rowan. Make the side plate panels look fast! Your cheek piece looks a tiny bit longer in the front too. You’re doing a great job here but remember that the magic is in the finish. For goodness sakes don’t stain it in that disgusting Stop Sign 🛑 red that we’re seeing these days. Otherwise, rock on!!

I don't know what a fast lock panel is supposed to look like, but I'm mostly following rifle number 34 from Bill Ivey's book for architecture. Here is a picture of the lock panel:


While not as dramatic as some Rowan county rifles, the rear of the panel does have some droop to it and the front is extended like other Frazier rifles. I was lucky enough to have my hands on a Rowan rifle when I was initially shaping the lock panels, so I figured I would copy the Rowan panels and later trim them down. Here's where I'm at so far:


For finish I was planning on two coats of ferric nitrate, but I still have to test that on some of the scraps I have from this blank before I do anything on that front.

I see your inspiration here. I have a Brooks gun made in the Rowan school with the same panels. I’m guessing that you’re going to incorporate some deep river in this project. Keep us posted! Best of luck to you!!

For Deep River elements I'm including the rotating wood patchbox, brass powder pick holder, three screw tang, and forestock molding. I got the powder pick holder installed this morning:



I also took some pictures of the revised triggers while they were out:





And I started preparations for wriggle engraving the powder pick holder:





If I like how this wriggle graver works out I'll spend some time making a little more refined example.

What do you use to fill in engraving? Most of what I've seen has some sort of black to highlight the lines. This rifle is more or less done, I'll get some decent photos when there's better lighting available.
