Late Night Ebay Carved Powder Horn
« on: June 19, 2025, 07:48:50 AM »
I am a night owl and sometimes check Ebay before I go to bed. I've picked up several good items with a "buy it now" that were posted too late for most people to see until morning. Tonight, an interesting folk art carved horn was posted about midnight with a "buy it now." The horn body was well done, perhaps better than the carving, and the horn had a mellow, great patina with minimal wear or damage, so I hit the "buy it now" button. It has a soft wood, low domed butt plug that suggests a New England origin, but the carved decoration could have been done anywhere. It did not have the usual mermaids, fish, and sailing ships found on many coastal New England horns. The horn also had an attractively shaped spout that was much better than average. I am waiting to get the horn in-hand to see how good it really is, but it was definitely worth the Ebay price this evening. Glad the rest of you don't stay up that late.

Shelby, we are working on solving the image hosting and have a work-around. You can try that or PM me, where I’d give you my email and you send me the pictures and I post them. https://americanlongrifles.org/forum/index.php?topic=85078.0

Can't wait to see it.  Treasure hunting has evolved, I do a lot of finding on the internet too.

On photos, another reliable method is to upload them somewhere else (I use Flickr, but there are other sites).  Then copy the link to the photo, and paste in in between the "img tags" you'll see if you click that icon above your text that looks like a photo of the Mona Lisa.  If you hover over it, it's called "Insert Image."

Rich,

Thanks for posting the "work-around" for uploading images. Took a few minutes to get the hang of it, but it works well, and not much harder than the original method, just a bit slower, once you've done it a time or two.

And before someone asks me to post a picture of the New England style soft wood plug, here it is.

The new horn arrived safely, and it is a great looking horn... even if it's not a Tansel. It has a low tab on the top of the front edge for strap attachment, with typical earlier New England angled holes that cut through a bit of the soft wood butt plug. Best part, horn is actually a little bigger than I thought it was at 14-1/2" outside curve. Not the best horn in the world, but a very nice-looking horn in great condition, and scraped so thin it's as light as a feather... well, a BIG feather.

P.S.  I really just posted this to see if the old image posting method is working again, since I saw the "crawler" at the top of the page saying we're back to normal.
