Swivel Breech deer
« on: November 15, 2009, 10:25:54 PM »
Saw these deer from about 1 mile away they had come to the top of the ridge while I was hunting another piece of state land.
Got to the pickup, moved it 1/4 mile. Cut around about 1/2 mile and stalked for another 400+ yards part time walking on my knees in 12" of snow. Stalking another young buck this one got in the way. I had actually walked past him.
Fun hunt. 1/2 mile drag to the road barely visible, not fun.

Related to show that  "stands" are not really an option. You gotta get out and walk the hills where I live.
Shot was about 40 yards BTW, he dropped off the steep hill and stopped too look look back. I eased to the edge and shot him.

This is taken about where I shot the deer. I saw then from about the center the photo coming back from a small creek just short of the trees in the distance.

Very nice, those pics remind me of my days in North Dakota.  Congrats!

Nicely done Dan, and good story.  Great to see you using the wender.  What's the rifle weigh?  What barrels do you have on it?

Beautiful rifle, nice trophy, and the story is the icing on the cake.  Thanks for sharing it with us, it is purely inspirational.

I think it weighs about 10.5-11 pounds. Have not weighed it yet on a good scale.
44" GM B weight swamps in 50 caliber trimmed 5" at the breech to make 40" with the patent breeches.
Butt is pretty massive and it actually holds very nice offhand. For me anyway.
Balances right at the entry pipe.

Yes - that is a nice looking rifle, Dan.  The contrast between bright barrels and dark stock is striking.

Very Nice gun and very nice buck. Balance and fit is the key to any gun, especially hunting...the 10-12 pound guns seem lighter if balanced properly.

Thanks for pictures.

Nice rifle.  Any deer with a flintlock is a trophy.  That one looks fit to eat.  when you talk about stands, in MN we commonly hang them on these things called trees, some of which are quite large and tall.  Good to see other folks score.  I remember a special time when my daughters were younger. I shot one in the deeper snow like you are talking about.  Too shallow for snowshoes and too deep to comfortably wade.  I conned them into helping me drag it out.  Both are grown up now and not so easy to con.  Special times.

That is a super nice rifle.
Would it be possible to get some more close-up pictures of the rifle and some information about it?
Thank you,
Billk

Taylor's swivel-breech rifle will be a .54, I think.  He's too many projects on the go - where to start - swivel breech first or .25?

  I sure like yours, Dan.

BTW- that 2 pointer is/was in good health. Just look at the length of those antlers for a year and 1/2 old mulie.
