Repair of a broken hammer acomplished
« on: October 02, 2025, 06:29:47 PM »
I picked up a percusion pistol in need of restoration. The hammer spur broke off. I can silver braze  it back or use my torch to weld it. The last time i welded an original hammer the case harding surface cracked. Does anealing help prevent this?

Case hardening will place stresses in the metal so I’d advise annealing it before any welding. Then it can be re-cased after shaping.

I finally got the hammer repaired on my pistol.  I figured to just use the propaine torch to heat the  parts to do the brazing. It didnt get hot enough but it did aneal the hammer some after trying to get it to work for twenty minutes before giving up and firing up the oxy-Acet.  What a difference a few hundred degrees makes.  I had made a jig to hold the spurr in place for the brazing  and it almost worked. The alignment was not stable enough and I ended up free handing the alignment using a hemostat. The ability to feel the parts key into each other was what i needed. Here is the result. Now i need to make an entry pipe. and metal ramrod with a large plunger type end. I was lucky enough to find a similar pistol as mine doing a Google image search and came across exactly what both the entry pipe and ram rod are to look like.

Good job on that hammer spur. Is that an Austrian pistol?
I just get that feeling about it's origin.

It has Liege proof marks on the .68 cal barrel. No other signatures.
