Another Screw tip.... but NOT a Crosby!
« on: February 13, 2010, 11:34:55 PM »
Tim, I couldn't resist using that Subject line.  I admire your horn work and prolificness.  I may try a banded horn next!

This is the horn that prompted my "Workmans Comp Claim" post.  @!*% thing tried to kill me.  The horn is scraped very thin and is the natural color, no dye.  The first picture makes it look a little redder than it actually is.  It is even more opaque than it appears in the pictures.  Base plug is cherry, held in with 7 wood pegs.  The integral button finial, strap attachment was inspired by an antique that Hurricane showed me.  Screw tip is antler, natural color, threaded 5/8-11 and should have enough lip to retain the strap.  I think this horn has a pleasing twist and could be carried on either the right or left side.

Ron,  Very nice.  I like the simple lines.  Did you scrape it that thin intentionally, or were you just trying to scrape down past the blood stains? ;)

No problem Ron, I had just come over here to post one but now...Just kidding  :) Great job, thin for sure, you can see the base plug through it. The base to horn fit looks perfect and the tip is outstanding. Even matching the stopper to the tip, nice work. How long is it?
The screw tips are addictive but the banded horns, Wow all I can say is watch out.

Ron, great looking screw tip horn.  I love the color of the horn, especially the double curve.  Personally, I would wear this on the right side keeping the tip up and in towards me to keep from snagging on anything.
You've also captured the great looking 'architecture' with the slendering of the throat to the tip.  Excellent job Ron. I like it.

Thanks for all the the compliments.  I was a fun build, except for the one departure to the injured/reserve list.

As for the scraping, I started out scraping just to get it smooth, even out the wall thickness at the base and slim up the throat.  The horn had a good bit of white when I started and as I scraped the white off, I liked the resulting color.  Then I realized I could see through the walls, so I just kept going.

The overall length, including base plug and tip is 14" around the outside curve.  Base is 2-1/4" diameter and the tip is 2-1/4" long.

Yep, I had it with me at Boonesborough.
