Screw Tip Banded Horn
« on: February 22, 2010, 05:23:44 PM »
This little horn has a pretty radical curve, it is about 10 1/2" around the outside curve. The Cherry base is about 2" across, held in with 4 steel pins and is hollowed out for about an inch. The antler tip is about 2" and is threaded 1/2-13. The bands, at this point, were heated and pressed on, no pins. Pros and cons welcome.

 Thanks, Tim C.

I would say it is all "pros" on this one Tim. That is a really cool little horn. Everything looks good, and the coloring is great.

Nice job!

Tim,
I'm not a horn guy by any means but you sure seem to have taken to making them like a duck to water.  Great looking horn!  I really love your banded one the most.
Thanks for sharing.

very nice and well done. i am curious, though, if a screw tip and bands on the same horn is HC. just trying to learn something. thank you  for sharing.  mark

HI Tim,
Another really cool one.  Seems like each one you make I like better than the previous one.  Good job.

Screw tips on banded horns were not the norm, most that I have seen were applied (Pinned). I have seen a couple banded horns with a screw tip. One of them had but two bands, the antler tip was of two parts, one screwing onto the horn, like a collar, the other piece screwed in to it. I have also seen some attributed Southern horns with screw tips but no bands.
I would be interested to hear of others thoughts.

Thanks for the positive comments, Tim C.

Well,

If you think it is not HC enough or has any other problems you can just send  it my way and I will keep it out of your sight...............   That is a beautiful horn .. in all ways.

It is my understanding that applied tips on southern horns were in an overwhelming majority, but, no matter what we look at from the 18th and early 19th century, there will always be those one or two examples that create an exception.  As soon as someone finds documentation for an exception then that item becomes HC/PC in people's minds and they want one to carry and use at the reenactments.

On the other hand people researching and reenacting the time period will tell you to look for and recreate what was common rather than recreating the exception.  If every horner started making and selling southern banded horns with screw tips the amount of southern banded horns with screw tips showing up at reenactments would present a situation where southern banded horns with screw tips would be way out of proportion to the amount of southern banded horns with screw tips actually used during the time period.

Same could be said of horns with pewter tips, including banded horns and I am guilty of that. I have seen two but made many.  Just poured two more this AM, I just like the darn things.

Keep up the good work Tim, I like this one.  Yes, there were less banded horns with screwtips, but may have been a trend carried over as 'yankees' went south for better weather and opportunities.   ;D
