muzzle decorations

Are there geographical or time trends to the decoration of the muzzles on longrifles? I'm referring of course to the various punch marks and scribed circles one some times sees on the flat muzzle end of the barrel.

The muzzle decorations that I have seen have been primarily on mountain rifles from the south i.e. Western NC, GA, VA, SC. I would guess most were rifles built in the 1830's-1850's.

A bit off track here; but I like to do that on mine!   That is the part of the piece we are looking at so much when loading cleaning etc..... ;D  Offhand rifles, chunk guns, even a 28 gauge fowling gun!

DWS,  Can't comment on the broader time frame or geographical aspect other than I have two Pennsylvania-made longrifles, both with muzzle decorations.  These two rifles are circa 1810 - 1830 (best estimate).
