Introduction and Question
« on: March 07, 2010, 07:50:02 PM »
Hello, I wanted to introduce myself and ask a question. My nickname is Okieboy (although I live in Minnesota now) and I have been muzzleloading for 46 years now. I build my own rifles from components and generally favor plainer rifles that emphasize architecture.
I have decided to pursue chunk shooting. While I am waiting on a custom barrel, I am going to shoot my old flintlock southern mountain rifle.
The first shoot that I am going to is the Bloomsdale,Mo. shoot, and I wondered if anyone could tell me more about it. For example, I know it is at 30 yards, but they still use spotters don't they? They shoot off THE picnic table, but what do you rest your barrel on? Can one do their loading from a shooting box or are you supposed to load out of your pouch?
I have really enjoyed reading on this forum and the depth and detail of the discussions. I look forward to posting on the building section when my new barrel arrives.
 Thanks.
Okieboy

Welcome, okieboy. Good luck with your query.  Most chunk matches are at 60 yards, while some, I understand are at 50 yards.  The shooters lay down and shoot off a chunk - log, adjustable wooden rest - whatever.  They mostly load at a table (I've seen in pictures), then walk forward, down into prone and prime, then shoot.  This might have some imperfections in it, but is basically what it's about in most places.

I didn't know there was a 30 yard Chunk Gun Match.  I would assume they would still use spotters, but maybe at 30 yards they may feel there is no need?  Just guessing of course.

Just go prepared regardless and enjoy the day! :)
