If you're fortunate enough to be able to get to the Tennessee Kentucky Rifle Show this weekend, you'll be able to drool over this Mark Wheland rifle, hopefully along with a Joe Mills bag and a Sibley horn. Mark is one of the younger builders with a long career (hopefully) ahead of him. I plan on taking the rifle Mark built for me with me when I "cross over." I look forward to seeing much more of his work.

Mark's work is always superlative, and this is no exception.  Notice the lock?  It's a Caywood "hardware store" lock.  I bought one for my Western Penn. build, and am very very impressed with it.  It is stiff, crisp, and has a short fast action with no jarring.  Sparks like Billy-be-!@*%&@.

The Richard Allen rifle is one of the great southern iron mounted guns.  Mark's copy is impressive.  I don't know what else to add.  The aging and coloration on the metal is superb.

The original is in the ALR virtual musuem.  When it was first posted, I recall someone posting that the piece that formed the back of the bow is missing, but that it probably had one originally.  Interesting that Mark or the customer chose to copy it as is.  Perhaps there is some question regarding exactly what the original guard configuration looked like?  Or perhaps the gun shows a long history of use after the piece was lost?  In any event, I think it is a wonderful set - rifle, bag and horn.  And when I say that, I mean both the originals and the copies. ;)

I was flattered to be asked to build the horn for the set.  The complete set (the original) is really a treasure.
