Shooting RH rifle left hand (mule ear).
« on: March 04, 2010, 12:02:43 AM »
I know that this can be done with flint and side hammer.
I do it with my double, but what about of shooting a mule ear rifle?

I'm thinking about making a O/U double rifle with mule ear action.
As I'm left handed I can make it lefthanded but this way it will be very difficult to sell it, in case I need to.

Is there any problem to shoot a RH mule ear lefthanded?

Thanks
Martin

Martin,
I am left handed and have shot a right handed mule ear Jenks carbine a few (maybe ten shots total) times. That's al my experience with a mule ear lock. It was no different to me than shooting my underhammer rifle.
I'd say go ahead and build the double right handed.  It should be a fun gun.

I have shot black for some time now, Ihave been a range officer along time also. I see more acidents from persusion guns than flinters.I would be conserned with particals from the cap so close to the eye. Wear glasses! goodluck ;)

I've never fired a mule ear, but it seems to me that particals from the cap is likely to get you in the face.  As said wear glasses if you go that route.  I used to shoot a double cap shotgun that would spray my left wrist when shooting that side, that is why I'd be concerned.  I can understand the resale part.

You should always wear glasses with any gun.

Yes! - cap, flint, wheellock, matchlock - modern - always wear tempered plastic lense protection - which brings up those tiny lense PC glasses - I don't trust them to protect my big shiny eyeballs, especially with the head on a slight slant when aiming.

Thank you all for the advises!!!

I must use lenses is I want to see the target . ;D.

I will probably make a single mule ear first as I have the barrel and stock of a Pedersoli rifle.
I can probably get the lock but much preffer to make some experimentation.

Thanks

I shoot left handed and shot a Brown Bess repo and a 12 Bore flinter with a right hand lock left handed/with glasses.  I think if you can shoot them lefty about anything would work.
