Engraving

     Want to do some engraving on stock and on ironwork.  Ergo, need some suggestions on good books/DVDs on the subject to purchase.  Thanks!

I dont belive its out yet but Track of the Wolf is to carry one by John Schippers. That is the one I would get. I also liked the dvd by Jack Brooks.

I regret having not seen the Jack Brooks DVD in that I have heard he is a first rate instructor. The ones I have seen are American Pioneer Video's Engraving a Kentucky Rifle with Wallace Gussler and Building a Kentucky rifle With Hershel House which has a small segment demonstrating engraving. I have Linton McKenzie's three set VHS series which is also very good. I like the look at a couple of Originals you get with Wallace's lecture on engraving in the beginning of the program.

I presume you mead "carving" with regard to the stock.  I have both Wallace's and Jack's tutorials and highly recommend them both.  They have quite different techniques, so are quite complimentary.

If you are just starting out - as I am, I would strongly recommend starting with Everett Ellenwood's carving tutorial.  It is not longrifle related, but I believe it does a better job of presenting the basics of carving.  This is in no way intended to down-play the value of Wallace's and Jack's tutorials!  I recommend studying it and then moving forward to Wallace's and Jack's.  You can find it at http://ellenwoodarts.com/main.htm .  You may also be able to find it at the library - I did.
