Transitional rifle
« on: March 18, 2010, 02:14:39 AM »
Here is a rifle I finished up last month. I used Chambers Edward Marshall kit for this. The barrel and lock are French grey, and the rest is fire blued. I cut the cheekpiece and thumbpiece inlays from fine silver. Design elements stolen from various sources!

That's a great sparking lock that seems to love those flints.

Your rifle looks great Waksupi.  You have gone to a lot of work with some fine detailing.  Did you use a heat treating oven to get the fire blue so evenly?

I worked with E.G. Smith for seven years. He is a master blacksmith, and taught me quite a bit in that time. The fire blueing was done with an oxy-act torch. I was lucky on this one, and didn't have to polish back to re-do any parts. Some times ya win, and some times ya loose on this. Same thing can be done with niter, and I was going to do it that way, but didn't have a container that would have been large enough to immerse the butt plate, or trigger guard.  It can also be done in a lead pot.
