Some test scraps

Working on some test scraps for my JP Beck, getting the dark curl I desire so far, but am going to try to get lighter between the curls if I can.  Does anyone work back the finish with scuff pad before stain/oil?

Left side, Aqua Fortis only, Right side Tannic acid then Aqua Fortis.

Same pieces with LMF nut brown stain.  Left side tannic acid then Aqua Fortis, Right side Aqua Fortis only.

When using an alcohol based stain like Dangler's or LMF, I use a rag soaked in alcohol to rub back areas of the stock.

I'm not 100% sure the AQF was heated enough to bring out the warm tones.

Quite possible, I used the discharge on the coal stoker which is hot but not that hot.  I will pick up a heat gun today at lowes and try the 750 degree setting to see what happens.  If it works I will probably go straight to boiled linseed instead of stain.

No.  Stain first and then rub back,  Stain some more and rub back some more.   Personally I use Dangler's stain.  Orange stain first.  It will scare you to death at that point.  Slop it on till it is solid orange.  Then I stain with medium brown and then dark brown in the areas that see little handling.  Soak a rag and start rubbing back the wear areas.  Add more medium and dark brown as needed, repeat process over and over till you get the look you are after.

Ok I will go with some more scraps, heat gun (hotter than the coal furnace) try some different stains in the line of what you did, the top pic on your post is really nice, just what I am looking for. Stain, rub, complain, stain, rub, etc.

Brett,
You need to put whatever final finish you are going to use on those test pieces.  That will change it a good deal in color, depth, and definition of the curl.  I used AF stain on a rifle I just finished and then used Chambers Traditional Oil for the final finish.  Big big difference after applying the Chambers.  The AF turned out a coffee colored golden brown and the Chambers Oil changed it to a Red Brown and really made the curl show.
