Sharp positive rake tool between centers with lite cuts should be fine. That’s how I done my last one a few months ago. Couple free passes  at the end. Most of them barrels are soft as butter.

Tapering a round barrel.

Years ago i did this. After the offset is established in the lathe I used a slower method of a series of short cuts and as the cuts moved farther back and finally finished,the LAST cut was very light to prevent chatter and the final FEW thousandths can be made.I am saying BREECH to muzzle and not muzzle to breech.This goes back about 60 years.
