Daniel Boone died today
« on: March 19, 2010, 03:00:33 AM »
Or at least the actor most closely associated with him.  Fess Parker died today at age 85.  I put this under "shooting" simply because many of us got interested in muzzleloading because of him.  Of course we all got a prime demonstration of what a bad hangfire was from the opening scene every week, & they got the coon skin hat wrong, but it was a good TV show for the time.  & Mingo (Ed Ames) sang even better than he acted.

Just watched old Davy on tape a few weeks ago. There's no doubt my fascination with longrifles stems back to those old Disney episodes.

Just saw an old D. Boone episode on a local TV channel and they were using (shudder) 45-70 trapdoor Springfields lightly disguised. Davy used the real thing.

I would agree there is no doubt that Fess Parker playing Davy Crockett and Daniel Boone got me on the road to muzzle loading.

By just watching him play both Crockett and Boone, I knew that someday I would have to have a Betsy or Tic-Licker, and I could hardly wait to grow up to make my flintlock dreams come true.

Thanks Fess.  I truly appreciate you peaking my interest into a life long hobby of pure enjoyment.

Rest in peace Davy/Fess--it was Fess as Davy Crockett that was my 1st TV hero as a kid.  In that series he carried an original rifle.  In the later [and poorer] Dan'l Boone series he carried a carved Belgian trade musket from what I have read.  Disney did a better job with the Davy series and it touched many a kid in my generation.  Fess was a nice guy and family man to boot [and made great wines].

If my memory serves me correctly, Fess donated his Kentucky rifle to a museum somewhere. I remember seeing it on display at the CLA show in Lexington 4 or 5 years back. I think it may have been a contemporary built rifle. Maybe someone will give us more details. Fess Parker was indeed one of my hero's. He was also a gun collector and wine maker. In California he was known as the "King of the wine frontier". He led a very interesting long life and will be sorely missed. Of coarse his film work makes him an imortal legend. Give em $#*! Davy!

A few of our local club members gathered down where I work this morning and we've decide that our White River Brigade shoot this Sunday will become our first annual, "Fess Parker Remembrance Shoot"

He meant a lot, to a lot of people.  We should have done this a long time ago.

Mr. Parker also narrated a film about John M Browning and the history of Browning Arms. It is a well done film as well as Mr. Parker's unmistakable voice and his love of the shooting sports.  Another ambassador of our sport has left us. He is now in a much, much better place and our prayers go out to his family.

 ;D Okay, folks, sing along...

Born on a mountain top in Tennessee,
Greenest state in the land of the free.
Raised in the woods so's he knew every tree,
Killed him a bear when he was only three.
Davy, Davy Crockett King of the Wild Frontier.

He fought single handed through the Injun war,
Till the Creeks was whipped and peace was restored.
And while he was handling this risky chore,
Made himself a legend, forevermore.
Davy, Davy Crockett the man who don't know fear.

When he lost his love, and his grief was gall,
In his heart he wanted to leave it all,
And lose himself in the forest tall,
But he answered instead, his country's call.
Davy, Davy Crockett, the choice of the whole frontier

He went off to Congress and served a spell
Fixin' up the government and laws as well.
Took over Washington, so we hear tell,
And patched up the crack in the Liberty Bell.
Davy, Davy Crockett, seein' his duty clear. (Serving his country well)

When he come home, his politickin' done,
The western march had just begun.
So he packed his gear, and his trusty gun
And lit out a grinnin' to follow the sun.
Davy, Davy Crockett, Leadin the Pioneers.

His land is biggest, and his land is best
From grassy plains to the mountain crest
He's ahead of us all in meeting the test
Followin' his legend right into the West
Davy, Davy Crockett, King of the Wide Frontier
King of the Wild Frontier.
