J. R. Crowley's drawings of Henry trade rifles
« on: April 09, 2010, 10:51:44 PM »
My first post here, I hope the collective resources can point me in the right direction.

Larry Walker's website on his work researching and building examples of the J. J. Henry trade rifles mentions that in 1989 J. R. Crowley  made full sized drawings of two rifles at the Museum of the Fur Trade. Larry tells me his copy of the drawings came from a friend and he did not know whether they were still available anywhere. So, I'm trying to track down either Mr. Crowley or another source for those drawings. They are different than the drawing available from the Jacobsburg Historical Society.

Can anyone offer a lead? Thanks -- Jay

Which rifle is depcited in a drawing from Jacobsburg?  I have the book, but did not know of a drawing.  You might also call the Museum of the Fur Trade & see what they know about a drawing.

Thanks for your interest in my quest.

Yes, contacting the Museum of the Fur Trade for more information will be my next step.

The drawings offered by the Jacobsburg Historical Society are of two different rifles they identify as "Fur Trade Pattern" and "Philadelphia Pattern".

The fur trade version  has normal Pennsylvania buttplate and triggerguard (non-scrolled) and  a large cast, unengraved, four piece box.   I've read that box style was reserved for the AFC contract.

The Philadelphia pattern looks fancier: a pierced, engraved box with pineapple finial.

Both stock profiles have curved comblines.

Any other leads on Mr. Crowley or his drawings?
