I recently saw this rifle up for auction on the net, a beautiful piece but I wonder what went wrong with the wire inlay?????

Looks like somebody tried to clean it with silver polish :o

Yeah, or steel wool, taking the finish right off with the scrubbing. If you use pure silver for you wire inlay it will tarnish if it is not sealed properly. Its really too bad they screwed with it. It is a PITA to refinish something like that and get it all matching again.

Sometimes the stock will shrink leaving the wire inlay alittle proud. Looks like someone tried to dress it up with some 0000 steel wool, hence the removed stain and finish, then used silver polish on it. It's a shame...Geo.

How do you clean silver wire inlay if it tarnishes? I was thinking of trying out some silver wire inlay in a powder horn base plug(black walnut).

Looks like the maker tried to 'fix' the wire in place by smearing some sort of glue in/around it and didn't get all the glue off the surface before staining. The lower inlay shows green in the curl and there appears to be a green tinge around some of the initials on the PB lid.

The best way to clean silver wire when it tarnishes is to just rub it briskley wit ha clean cotton cloth. No polish is needed.
