Ed Thomas on the blog
« on: May 05, 2010, 06:28:16 PM »
Wow, aren't we having a special week.  Another great Southern rifle on the blog.  I don't know how in the world I missed seeing this at the Norris show.

In my opinion this is truly one of the great contemporary southern iron mounted guns in existence.  Super piece of work and really exceptional considering it was made in the early 70's. Love the tool marks!

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

I agree Mike.  This is another rifle that I will eagerly file away and use flagrantly when it comes time to build my own southern mountain rifle.

This is what a Southern Mtn. rifle "10" looks like.

It's a fabulous gun, it makes me lust for one.

Look at the grain in the toe. How did he keep that wood from breaking off during the build? I'd put the BP screw in, and pop the toe off fo' sho'. It's something to keep in mind when designing and selecting wood for one of these delicate beauties.
