New .54cal Dickert in the white
« on: May 21, 2010, 01:42:45 AM »
Just received a .54cal Dickert in the white from Tip Curtis Frontier Shop.I feel like a kid at Christmas. It has a 42" swamped C weight barrel with Tip's standard maple stock. It's just what I wanted and a lot of gun for the money. Tip put the first coat of stain on before it shipped. It was a great pleasure doing business with Tip Curtis. I highly recommend that anyone looking for a gun, check with Tip before you buy.
Now I just have two problems to solve. Take my time to finish the gun right and keep my wife from taking it as her rifle. Shirley was the first one to shoulder the gun. The first comment was "sweeeeeet" and the second was " what are you going to shoot?"
Oh well!
Here are some quick pics.

These are always nicely made, clean lines- hard to do better than that.

Very nice looking rifle.  I have had dealings with Tip several times and would highly recommend him.

Nice looking sleek rifle and it should finish up well.  Really nice lines. Tip's kits, in the white guns and finished guns are nice and seem to be a good value - one of the best kept secrets out there.  He does not have a website - he stays busy without one so I don't think he has any interest or plans to ever start one up - so a lot of people don't know about how much he has to offer, but he stocks a huge selection of stock patterns, and components.  Always worth checking out if you are considering a build, especially if you can catch him at Friendship or one of the other shows where he sets up (he was setting up at Noblesville for a few years).  I am told you can also stop by his workshsop down in west Tennessee and buy direct there.

There is so much growing interest in southern rifles evidenced by the heavy traffic in posts here on the subject, that I should mention Tip offers some nice southern pre-carved patterns - Tennessee, a stepped wrist early Virginia style, and a really beautiful little later Virginia (he call it his "small Virginia pattern) style based on a late Sheets rifle, that really handles nicely.

Tip is located a few miles North of Nashville and has more parts than anyone in the world. Probably a thousand barrels and same number of locks and other parts. I have bought from him for years and an amazed at his shop. A one man operation since his wife died and a nice southern gentleman.

I went to Tip's shop a couple years ago. I was surprised there were no signs that said" Tip Curtis's Fronter Shop" anywhere, not even at the road in front of his shop.

You take the Cross Plains exit off I65, drive into Cross Plains, take a left at the big plastic pig, drive a half mile or so and Tip's shop is the big building on the left. There is a huge house on the hill above the shop made from hand cut chimney stones that Tip collected from old home places.

I have always liked the Lancaster style guns. I have looked at many pictures of the different makers styles from that area and  came back to the J Dickert every time.
As for another gun for my wife, it would have to be just like this one. She really likes the way this style looks and shoulders. Her favorite pistol is a Colt model 1911 that she can shoot better than most people I know.

rusty51, I don't know what stain he used. I didn't think to ask. Give Tip a call and he will tell you.
