Hoppes 9

Is Hoppes 9 sufficient for coating the bottom of a barrel prior to assembly?  It appears to be a little thicker that most oils and claims to not affect stock wood.

The Hoppe's #9 that I am familiar with is a nitro-based powder solvent based upon nitrobenzene.  I use it to clean centerfire rifles but I would not use it for a rust preventative barrier.

i like beeswax, wont evaporate or get absorbed by the wood (at room temp anyways)

This product is called hoppes 9 lubricating oil, heavier viscosity.  I think there is a hoppes 9 family of products, cleaners, oils, etc all #9 but different products.  I am having difficulty getting info on what can be used on the bottom of the barrel channels that I can readily get my hands on.  I may just oil it and hope for the best.

I have a bottle of the oil from gun cleaning kits and its fair on modern guns.  One of the old recommendations for your purpose also used to be a good car wax.

That's the old formula you're thinking of. I used to use it for after shave.
The new stuff smells completely different, and I wouldn't put it on my dog.

I have used lithium grease for years on my breach plugs and touchhole liners.   They have always come back out easily and clean.

   I would add LPS #3. It sprays on thin, soaks in, then pretty quickly dries to an almost wax. Very durable, and water resistant. A very thorough coating.

I like Renaissance Wax to protect the barrel bottom and the stock!!

Back when my wife and I were dating I had lamented the fact that I had a real issue trying to find things to put in her Christmas stocking. She suggested perfume, I said I wouldn't know what kind to get. She said "Just get something YOU like". So.........I took an old empty perfume bottle and filled it with Hoppes #9 and that's what she got in here stocking. I don't recall her ever WEARING it though. It IS an alluring fragrance and one that reminds me of my Dads den when I was a kid.
