I happen to have a long rifle with a front sight containing a 'strip' of ivory where you 'look'.  Just fine if you have the light behind you; but shooting in to the light you have a regular dark frt sight blade.  I also happen to shoot a long rifle with a flourescent strip in frt sight that works the same.  That has changed to an 'Ochre" colured blade (where you look) That is also frowned upon depending where I'm shooting! ;)  Daryl's suggestion of filing/stoning the top of the frt sight at an angle or slope to pickup light (in the bush in particular) works quite well.

Here are some photos of the way I make a front sight with an ivory blade.  Basically I just capture a tapered piece of ivory between the bottomof the dovetail and a tapered slot in a metal sight base.
