PA patchbox designs
« on: July 09, 2010, 05:47:17 PM »
I am trying to design a patchbox for a longrifle I am having built. The gun is an Isaac Haines kit from Jim Chambers. My vision for this gun is to be rather plain and unadorned. But I want it to have a brass patchbox... Anyone have examples of simple, unadorned brass patchboxes on PA guns? I was thinking of something like a bird shape or horse with limited engraving--maybe a thin side opening lid?

any resources I should try to find at my library?

thanks

Ken, RCA 1 and 2 would be your best resource for examples of some simpler patchboxes. They should be in your personal library. You didnt mention if you are trying to saty in the Isaac Haines style or just using that pattern. Horse head and Bird  finials were later styles and usually these patchboxes were more highly engraved. There are several 2 piece patchboxes in these books that are simpler and most likely earlier that are less adorned and might be what you're looking for.

Ken.....check out those Isaac Haines patchboxes, then think about this.     Make a two piece box with the head of the box
being similar to one of the IH  boxes, then just add a lid.   Simple but looks good..........Don
