Carvings on the woodsrunner original
« on: March 17, 2023, 12:11:16 AM »
I want to attempt to carve my new woodsrunner kit t reproduce the original as closely as possible. I have seen a few sets of pictures in these forums, and you can make out most of the details, but none seem to show the area of the forestock around the entry pipe. Am I overlooking something? Do photos of this area exist? Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I did a pretty thorough search a month or two back and outside of the pictures on an old thread on this site (the thread was comparing the Feather Rifle with the Woodsrunner) I didn’t find much else. I’d love to see some if you find them. If you haven’t seen the thread I’m thinking of just run a search her for those two rifles and it should come. Adding the Feather Rifle weeds out all the recent posts on the new kits.

The entry pipe area on the "woodsrunner" rifle is so saddle worn that all evidence of what was carved there is indiscernible. It most likely mimicked what was at the tang but that's just speculation.

That whole rifle (antique) is probably 100X cruder and more crooked than the piece that Kibler is reproducing so I don't see any point in trying to make it a dead on copy as you'd probably have to soak one of Jim's kits in water and dry it in the hot sun 3 or 4 times just to get the crooked 'wonky' factor.  Kibler's piece is a gun stocked and reproduced (kits) by a real professional.  I don't think I can say as much for the dude who stocked up the original rifle.

Wallace had a great article on the rifle in an older issue of MB mag maybe 15 years or more back - had some decent pictures there, might be able to find it and get some more detail.  I can't remember the exact year or month but it was post-2000.   I know, I know, not very specific.

The picture Mitch shows is the best of that area that I’ve seen. You might reach out to Ian Pratt on this forum. I’ve seen the pictures that he has of the original rifle. The one I recall of that area is from the right side though. Ian may have some additional insight as to what might have gone on there based on conversations he’s had with Wallace.

Not exactly what you are looking for, but here are pictures of Jim Kibler’s and Bill Pritchard’s interpretations of how the carving in the entry pipe area might have looked. I took these pictures at the 2018 CLA show with the permission of the builder/owners, of course.

Hope these help give you some ideas.
