Thank you Tim for your input here.  I totaly agree with your summation relating to how these fancier map horns were commissioned in the 18th century. It would be easy to believe that most horns of this type were made more for show than to actually be used for the hunt or the battlefield. I remember reading somewhere that certain personalized military duty "map horns" were used as documents. A means of recording a soldiers war records and even used later in life to attain Gov't pensions. I cannot recall where I read this. Anyway, the lack of actual use for these types of powderhorns can explain a great deal regarding the lack of wear on many of them.

Tim's comments made me think of some of the souvenirs I brought back from Viet Nam, and Japan.  G.I.'s for centuries have been bring home the same $#@*, and you can still get copies of the stuff today that I picked up 40 years ago.
