Klette Rifle Build
« on: July 13, 2010, 06:20:40 AM »
This rifle was started in Hershel's 2007 NMLRA class in Woodbury. The butt plate, trigger guard, trigger, trigger plate and side plate were made in class. Hershel and John made the nose cap and Hershel engraved my signature on the barrel. The patch box, thimbles, sights and ramrod end was made after the class. This patch box with 15 knuckles was a little difficult but not to bad, I only had to throw 2 away before I got a good one :o. I did the balance of the engraving. The stain is AF with hand rubbed BLO for the finish. The stock was a scraped and burnished.

No touch hole liner was used. I used a .067 drill to drill the TH and it worked like a champ. I did not loose powder as the ball was seated and ignition seemed pretty fast.
Simple pinned trigger that I got just right to the sear so trigger pull was nice and easy. The lock is a Chambers lock that I did a little modification to and did a little internal polishing to and man that thing is smooth and throws a bunch of sparks. I used a 44" 54 cal Rice barrel and I belive it is one the best that I have ever used, definately worth the money.

I hope ya'll enjoy, all comments welcome.

I really like that you copied the guard profile nicely from the original.  I think that guard is so unique and such an important part of the overall look on the Klette rifle - it is very different from the "Step Toe" group of Virginia guns in that it has such a small bow and long grip rail.   But since there is not a brass casting available of a correct guard, most people substitute a cast guard that does not look right.  I think this is the first time I have seen someone copy that guard shape so you could get the proportions and curve of the grip rail correct.   Nice work on those hinges too!

And since you got a nice compliment from Mr. Shipman there is not much else to say ;)

Gorgeous. I love the line weight changes on your engraving. I've got to practice that some more. Way nice piece of wood too!

Very pretty.  Only comment I have is the metal looks old, pitted and the wood new...

Very nicely done. Your barrel and other iron surface finish really stand out. Please tell us about your antiqueing process on the barrel.

Very nice! There are more knuckels in that hinge than I can count!
I would not worry about the "new" wood.  Use will bring it into conformity :-)
kind regards, heinz

Really outstanding rifle.  I'd say you accomplished everything you could have hoped for on this build.

I wondered wher you have been hiding Jim.  That is a very cool gun. No extra wood left on her.  I really enjoy looking at your work!!

Thanks very much to all for the nice comments.

Dr. Tim I am down in Baton Rouge and have been working the day job so much that it is hard for me to get time at the rifle bench. I have been keeping an eye on you though and you have been turning out some nice stuff yourself.

Mr. Bill that is a great honor thank you.

Guy the guard is one of the things I liked most about this rifle. fortunately there are very good photo's of this rifle in Whisker's Gunsmiths of Virginia. I was able to scale the guard up from these photo's and thanks to Hershel and Frank's guidance at the forge I was able to turn out a decent copy. I may take this and cast a brass guard from it and see how it comes out. I really enjoyed building this rifle and would not mind building a brass version.

The aging of the metal parts was done using Hershel's process of boiling in a clorox and water solution. I almost let it go to long, I engraved all the parts before hand and when I pulled the parts out I thought I had lost all of my engraving. A little carefull work with a wire wheel helped save the day. I probably had to much clorox in the solution or let it boil to long.

The stock was scraped not sanded. This being a red maple stock with bold stripping I thought it turned out well with the scraped surface. I could not get it as smooth as you can get with sugar maple.  I have not mastered that aging process for the wood so I will let use help me out here. This rifle shoulders and holds beautiful and shoots like a dream. I am going to give it the Iron Man test in a few weeks. There is a 75 shot match at my home range I should find any bugs then.

Tim, Maarlsral, heinz, Tom C, Mike R, Capt. Fred, Rich, Tom E, thank you all.

I don't really care for the heavy pitting, but otherwise, that is an outstanding piece of work.    The scraping is evident and the gun doesn't look over worked.   The engraving is wonderful.   Now.... the patchbox,  that is just showing off!! :D

Great gun.  I love the look of a scraped stock.  I'm envious of your engraving.  Thanks for posting the pics.

While I'm not a big fan of the chlorox finish, I do like the rifle over all.

All in all, nice work, and I do like the scraped finish on the wood.

I wonder what it would look  like, as new, with rust blued hardware? ;)

God bless
