Nose cap Lips

I just noticed on P181 of the DGW catalog a description of the Ted Cash nose caps, "lips are turned to the inside like originals". I'm planing on making a nose cap- what are they talking about?

They mean the top edges of the cap, where the sides of the cap return to the barrel. The brass wraps around the wood completely, and does not leave the wood exposed between cap and barrel.

Not to reiterate the obvious but- just to make sure- then the metal meets the side flat of the barrel and the "lip" bends straight down and lies along the side flat of the barrel-thus encircling and covering the wood in that area. Is that correct? If so, the metal on the originals must have been pretty thin. What would have been the thickness of the metal? Thanks for any help.

Other than some Lehigh Valley rifles with nose caps that completely encircle the barrel,I have not seen originals where the metal of the nosecap wrapped down inside the barrel channel.  I think what they are indicating is that there is a small rolled upper edge on the nose cap.  This edge as Tom said will then abut directly to the side flats of the barrel.  You are much better off building your own nose cap, otherwise you are using a generic shape that will force you to alter the foreend to the shape of the nose cap.

That's why I wanted to make my own.  I am actually making sort of a generic plains rifle with a hooked breech where the barrel will be removed for cleaning.  I therefore wanted to make the front tip of the full length stock a little larger than average in the interest of strength, in short, the distance from the bottom of the barrel to the top of the ramrod is slightly more than normal which means the standard, store bought nose cap won't fit without an odd looking contour in the area. So I decided to make my own.
