Dixon's coming up
« on: July 15, 2010, 01:18:53 AM »
As is the tradition, last full weekend in July, 5 minutes from the Kutztown exit off Pennsylvania's I 78. (Head opposite way from town).   Plan on having fun.  Just about anything you want in the contemporary line will be there for cash-on-the-barrelhead.  None of this waiting stuff.  Can't buy from one vendor, go see another.  Don't forget Chuck and Greg, the hosts, inside the building, and check out the general antiques in the barn across the street. At least that is the history, and that's not to say that orders are not taken, too.  Parts, guns, accoutrements, seminars, contests, friendship, ribald tales and arguments.

Hope Freddie Harrison is there with his normally outrageous wood supply.  Expect to see Fred Miller and check out Wayne Dunlap's wood pile, too.  I like Dixon's just for the sticks.  Then add demonstrations by some of the world's best builders and manufacturers...all willing to share their knowledge and experience.  What's not to like?  Nothing else like it in these parts.

Now the frisky child in me suggests that you consider the following diversions to ramp up your experience.  Fogelsville Hotel offers the finest in food and hospitality in the area.  Many gunsmiths and smooth operators congregate there.  Drivers,  keep it below .08.

Also, the area now has a right proper casino about 1/2 hour away.  Hollywood Casino, right past Fort Indiantown Gap heading toward Harrisburg on I 78, now has all table games, including blackjack, poker and craps, and it is a clean and safe place.   Free, covered parking in sight of the elevator, sign-up bonuses usually available, and para mutual thoroughbread horseracing also at this Penn National facility.  Food only fair throughout, but best to be found is in the bar at top of escalator.

Also, for out-of-towners, 15 minutes away, a general gun show at Allentown's Rodeway Inn, 1151 Bulldog Dr., right off I 78 on left, this side of Allentown.  July 24-25, 9-5, Sat. and 9-3, Sun.  I'd rate this a C+ gunshow for the area, but always seem to sell or buy something there, so I'd say it's worth a visit.

Note, speed limits slow down to 55 mph on I 78 around Dixon's and heading into Allentown.  They enforce this high volume area, as well as the adjacent side roads.

Welcome to eastern Pennsylvania.  Life's short.  Relax and enjoy it.  Hope to see you there.

If you haven't been before .................be sure to look for folks wearing ALR TShirts and get to know a great crowd!! Great opportunity to meet accomplished builders and suppliers and sit through some seminars, see demos of everything from sharpening your gouges to forge welding a barrel.  It will likely be hot an humid!!! so get lots of the great Iced Tea and look at all the guns and accoutrements entered in the judging as well as a few originals.  If you are building something, bring it along and take the chance to get some feedback

I wish you guys would quit. I can't wait to get there. It's my first time and I have a long expensive list. I hope to meet you all. This forum is top notch as well as the people that contribute to it. I have developed an addiction to Flintlock rifle building and I am sure Dixon's will be worse than this forum for feeding the fire. I fly out in 7 more long boring days. Make that 6 I get to shoot all day Saturday!

Barbie and I will be loading up our cabinet/display table full of locks, rifle kits and a few finished rifles this weekend.  We'll unload everything Thrusday evening and be ready to see everyone early Friday morning.  We're the second and third table in the center isle of the big tent below the shop.  Stop by, spend a few bucks or just say hello.  We can't wait to see everyone.

Gad, you mean I'll have to sit there and  look across the aisle at you again??????    Can't wait, fortunately my back is feeling somewhat better, at least good enough to go.  Don't forget to check out my latest barn gun, and maybe even buy
a chance on it.....who knows, somebody will win it.   It kinda looks like "DaHagans" Bucks county rifle, minus all the fooforaw............Don

Don,
If things are as usual at Dixon's, there will be so many people in the isle that we won't be able to see each other until late Sunday afternoon.  Guess we can stand looking at each other for that short time.  Ha!  Don't know who's back is worse, yours or mine.  Neither of us is getting any younger.

Jim.....you got that right.   I plan to enjoy as many "Dixon's" as I possibly can, it just so great to see so many old friends.
Then I think of Dave Dodds, he really was hoping he could make it to Dixon's one more time, poor guy just didn't quite
make it, but he will be there in spirit..............Don

Looks Like I will be able to go now as well. Very very anxious to get my learnin on.  Particularly the gun building seminars.

I also want to pick barrel brains about double rifle set ups.  (don  ;) )

I'll be the one who looks like the guy in my avatar.......just not bloody and without a dead pig............unless things get really weird, then who knows.

ahhh...maybe next year [but I'll be retired and poor then].  Envy you guys that live close.  By the way, what is Indiantown Gap being used for these days?  I took basic training there in 1965.

And just imagine, this event almost closed down 4 years ago because the powers that be were getting tired with the administration and logistics.

Its a great tradition that I hope will continue long into the future. All of the classes and the judging really give it a learning experience focus that is different than other shows....I just wish it were in September or early October....The heat is tough!!  But hey I am a wimp re humidity.....

I left Dixon's about 3:30pm this afternoon, no thundersorms as of then, though my wife did hear some distant thunder over the horizon to the west.

I don't know about west, I headed out about 3 and did not hit any storms until I was across the NY line above Williamsport.

It seemed that the heat thinned things out by early afternoon.

As always,  got to meet a few board members, saw some great guns, and of course learned a few things.

well worth the drive every year.
