My Virginia...

I built my last longrifle 25 years ago.  Finding this site, and seeing all the fine rifles you guys are building got me interested in them again...I've spent the last 10 years or so rebuilding/restocking 19th century cartridge guns, and it was time to do something different.

This one is inspired by RCA #131, though not intended to be an exact copy.  I started with a Pecatonica precarve, a 42" "C" weight Colerain in .54, and a Chambers early Ketland lock.  The set triggers are mostly Davis, with a handmade firing trigger.  I made the thimbles and one-piece nosecap following the tutorials posted here (thanks, guys!), along with the sideplate, ramrod (from a hickory split) and as many of the small parts as I could make.  I re-learned just how contrary curly maple can be to finish... ;)

I also took a bit of a leave from building ML's and ahve returned to the fold.  Almost the same hiatus.  Feels good to be back building again.  You done good.

Greg....nice effort at a first gun, nice overall finish and appearance.    There are areas of the gun that could be improved
but until someone points these out to you, you will never know.   You should bring it to the CLA show in Lexington on the
20th and 21st of Aug.   We will probably have a "clan" meeting (ALR members) sometime during the show, bring the gun
along and we can point out some things that you might want to change on your next one..............Don

Thanks for the kind words...Don, I'd like to take you up on that offer...I know some of the areas I'm not happy with, and always welcome constructive criticism.  I don't know how one gets better without it.   I'm sure the rifle is as flawed as it's maker  ;).

Tim, my plans are to drive up early on Saturday and spend all day at the CLA show.   I'm looking forward to seeing some GOOD work close up, and as many originals as I can...my opportunities for research are pretty slim otherwise...and I intend to take advantage of it.

Cheyenne, the stock is stained with aqua fortis, and finished with Pro-Custom oil (not traditional, but I had it on hand, and am familiar with the product).
