Bedford for review
« on: August 01, 2010, 09:08:08 PM »
Well, here goes nuthin.   ;)  Just finished this one and would like some feedback on it as the closest I've ever been to an actual Bedford is pics in books, and some things I just couldn't tell from that.  Sixth gun so far, but this is the first one I've done all the way from a plank by myself, hand inletting the barrel and drilling the ramrod hole.  Okay, I can say I've done it now, but that's a lot of extra work when Fred Miller is only a few days away by mail or 4 hours by Jeep!  Found one in the Bedford book that didn't have a ton of drop so it would fit the wood I had, scaled up the patterns from the pics, but other than that not a copy of any one particular gun.  .54 Getz ultralight 7/8" barrel (got it off here from RDillon last year), L&R lock, sugar maple, made my own toeplate and sterling inlays from sheet.  Nice light hunting gun, and very accurate when I sighted it in.  Made as a gift for my old college roommate who lives in Union Township, PA right on the Bedford Co line.

Osprey, good work, something to be proud of. What type of browning solution did you use? Great color.  Al

Al, I used the LMF cold brown.

Gary, just at 6.4lbs.  Sighted it with 80 gr FFF, ended up with a 1.5" group at 75 yards off a bench rest, best my eyes could do.  Yes, it kicks a bit, but my buddy isnt' a target shooter and can handle it for a few shots while hunting.  He likes stuff like 300 Magnums anyway... ::)

Nice looking Bedford, good fit and finish, carving looks Bedford, all right. Maybe you could have slimmed the sideplate panel vertically a little more (taken more off from the tang down to the side panel).  I usually like the top of it to align with the top of the side flat on the barrel.

I would have liked to see your buddies face when you gave it to him. I'll bet he was thrilled. Nice work.
