Mystery File
« on: July 31, 2010, 09:42:58 PM »
I have two smooth cut files with rounded toothed edges. They look like conventional mill files except for the rounded edges. These are my favorite draw filing files for draw filing barrel flats. They seem to not dig and leave scratches. What are they? I would like to order som more but I don't have a name. I have not seen them in any file catalog I have run a cross. Perhaps they were a file for sharpening some big saw blades? The one has a K&E trede mark. Both were amongst the tools my Dad left me and heaven knows where he got them.  BJH

Come on BJ, you don't need those special things to draw file a barrel.    I use just plain, single cut, smooth , about 10" to draw file....no problem.    Then, if you want something to remove steel more rapidly, use a long angle lathe file....they work
just as good, but might require a finer file to clean up.   When finished, rub the be'jesus out of them with scotch brite.....

Dr Tim,

I use one of those as well.  Works great on octagon barrels and flat-sided actions.
