Winds at Friendship????
« on: September 16, 2008, 03:32:10 AM »
Hi guys - this may not be the best place for this topic, but was wondering how everyone faired yesterday at Friendship - we got hit with gusts up to 75 mph (remanants of Ike) at my house, just about 35 miles northeast of Friendship.

Has anyone heard?  They had a pretty good crowd there so I hope no one sustained much damage in thier camps or on commercial row.

We lost a chunk of our roof and some nice old trees in our yard - much of the region is without power still,

Guy

Same here in central Ohio.  And yes there was a lot of people at Friendship. Campers everywhere. I hope they were spared!

They were out of power as was most of the entire area all the way to Lawrenceburg.  Lots of trees down and limbs falling.  They closed the range due to the debris.  One tent in primitive was struck by a falling tree and the lady inside suffered a broken ankle, but nothing worse thank goodness.  I haven't heard from Dad or any of BOD members today so I'm afraid I don't have any updates for today.  Hopefully the range was opened back up and power restored at some point today.  If I hear more I'll post. :)

Yah, we got hit pretty good.  I just got home.  There weremany trees down and the worst wind I have driven in.  I left Friendship in the afternoon to go back to teh state park and close up my camper.  I rolled up Homer Dangler's canopy.  By the ttime Homergot to his camper it had a couple of trees fallen over it.  No major damage.

The wind was incredible.  No one shot that afternoon.  I heard extimates in the 75-80 range and now believe those were right.  There was almost no rain.  That was in the northern part of teh state - 6" in my rain gage in northern Ind.  I have pic of damage around the range.  The most trees down were along the creek.  I'll post them tomorrow.  I need to sort them out.  There was one injury that I know of.  I woman in primitive had a tree fall on her tent/Tipi?.  She had a broken ancle and prehaps lower leg.  Reports were incertain.

More tomorrow - too tired to proofread.

I left at 4:30 and there was no power, but the range was open and a lot of shooting.  Local radio spokeof 850,000 without power initially, and down to 550,000 the last I heard.  Barbie,  I enjoyed talking with your dad.

Thanks for the update Larry!  I'm sure he enjoyed talking to you too.  He must be lonely without me up there!  HaHa!!  He's probably gotten into lots of mischief and fun this weekend! ;D

Sorry to hear about the injury - but glad to hear things were not worse there.  I've not seen sustained winds like that in this part of the country.

Well, me, my wife and me father went over Sunday.  It was my wife's first experience there.  I told her the weather would turn crappy cause it always did at Friendship.

We were in the primitive camp when it really got gusty.  There were already two big limbs out of the big sycamore near the bridge.  Another big limb out of a sycamore near the Powder magazines.  The power was out in the sheep sheds around 12 or so.
I helped a couple fold up their tent as they were getting out of Dodge fast.  Just when we were leaving an ambulance and some emergency vehicles went by us towards the primitive side.  Musta been the lady with the broken ankle.
There were three or four trees down in the creek on our way out.  Power lines were down across the west bound lanes of route 50.  Power was out all the back to Chillicothe, except for a Bob Evans at the Kings island exit on 71.

Fun day though.

Here are a few pics of Friendship.  Largest amount of damage was along the creek:

I don't think any of the NMLRA buildings were damaged.  A barn blew down just as you turn onto the Olean Road on the way.  Roof metal from that barn was wrapped around utility poles.

Power was restored Mon. eve about 7:30. Most everything was cleaned up by then, bathhouses reopened and weather turned absolutely beautiful for remainder of shoot. Must have one bad day or it wouldn't be Friendship but Sun went above and beyond!!
