One shot powder horn
« on: August 20, 2010, 12:01:04 AM »
As the kids have gotten older, mom and dad have slowed down - we are taking in little county museums.

One thing we saw recently was a "one shot powder horn" on display in the Paris, MO courthouse.  It is apparently made of cow horn with a plug of some kind of wood attached to the "powder horn".  This is then attached to another plug via a braided leather piece.  The museum card did not list date, nor donor.  My quess would be something like...30 - 40 grains of powder is what it would hold.

Now...at first I thought, no it is just a measure.  But no, it had its own plug.  Was this a form of early "speed loading"?!

Anyone ever run across anything like this?

Thanks

Heck, don't remember.  Palmyra or however you spell it and Hannibal are not that far away at any rate.  The town was settled early too.  Incorporated in like 1835 or something.

I have found it amazing what jewells like hidden in private collections and small county historical museums across the country.  Here in MO a lot of folks came out of Madison, KY area and Cocke, TN area early.  We for instance own part of the Boone sons salt lick.  I am still hoping to find a cache of long rifles or some such in my woods walks!   :)  No luck yet!

A one shot powder horn harkens back to the wooden "Apostles" (individual powder charge flasks) carried by matchlock armed folks.

Thank you.

Could it be a priming horn?

Had not really thought about that, [ a priming horn].  I am only going off what the museum card showed is all.

Heck if I know!

Thank you.

Are you sure that it isn't a salt horn?
