Ultimate barn gun mounts!

Don Getz has been having fun with his barn guns complete with their lack of butt plate..  Here's a 1730 vintage butt plate that achieves the same end with a bit more work than just rasping off the butt.  The trigger guard is also carved from wood.

Seems like a classic case of having more time than money :) .  The carved screws are a nice touch.

What a great idea!  I would have trouble thinking of that as a barn gun though.  Consider that the finest of modern shotguns, costing $100,000 and more are often finished without a butt plate with nothing more than a checkered butt.  So this design may very well belong on the finest of longrifles.  (Darn hard to protect while loading though).

Those old 'barn guns' can have wooden sideplate and guard to go with the butt. How they get those wood screws to line up so nice?

How about some photos of the rest of the gun.  Didn't find it on Bolk's site.  Perhaps it's an item he had in the past.

It seems these barn guns are turning up a lot lately! Here's a link to pictures of one that was on display at the CLA show in 2008.

Come on you guys, I was building barn guns because they were supposed to be "simple".   However, they do give me
some ideas.   Still easier than fitting a buttplate like that........Don

Jim,

When I looked at Bolk's site yesterday there were three Bongarde guns in the list including the one from which the link was pulled.  Today there is only one listed!  I hadn't down loaded any other pictures.

I love the carved details on both.

I sure did miss that one that Gary has posted from the CLA show.  Every year somebody seems to post pictures of a real nice piece that a failed to see in person.
Those carved on lock bolt escutcheons are neat, but the carved buttplate details on both guns are fabulous.
