Please help ID old rifle
« on: September 07, 2010, 02:41:26 PM »
My father inherited this rifle a while back and we have very little information on it's history.  I am making a display case for his birthday, and I would like to find some history behind the rifle to go with it.  The only markings I can find say "Henry Elwell Warranted".  Here are some photos:

You don't say where on the gun, bit I'll wager the ELWELL marking is on lockplate. Elwewll is probably 2nd or 3rd most common name on percussion gunlocks sold thru hardware stores in 19th century. So that takes us nowhere. I also am guessing that the bands holding tyhe barrel to fore-stock is tape. Only martial arms use wide bands to my knowledge. Now if you want us to see if anything more can be said, look at our library and see the photos. The usual & useful photos are half views, butt to just ahead of lock + similar view of opposite side + full length view. None of those posted are of much help. The better quality the pics the better we can do + please stay in focus.

Thanks for the feedback.  I will get some better photos taken tonight and upload them in the morning.  In the one photo, you can barely see the name "Henry Elwell" on the lockplate.

Take the peace of rag out from between the hammer an nipple, it will decay after time and clog the nipple. It happen to me on a double barrel shotgun, real pain to clean out.    GOOD LUCK,  AL

WVA, or Ohio, most probably. Can't leave out the other Ohio River Valley states, though.
Nice little rifle, thank you for showing it. The full patch box is a real plus on this gun.

Where is your father from? Where was his family from...Any family history at all to go with the gun??

We are in southeast Michigan, been here our whole lives.  The gun came from my uncle when he passed away.  Where he got it from is a mystery.  He was born in the early 1900's, also lived here in Michigan his whole life, hunted and fished his way through the great depression.  I am still trying to get better photos.  I will hopefully have those tomorrow.  Thanks to all who have replied.

Sometimes the design of the patchbox, the head of it, can help locate a gun.
Just out of curiosity, would there be a rivet holding the toe plate to the buttplate? Rivet, iron perhaps, not screw. Kind of a late thing, done in NY and Michigan, perhaps other places.
If you happen to have the barrel off you might look underneath for initials or name stamped in, which likely would be the barrel maker.
Nice rifle, regardless. Be kind to it, if you intend any restoration.
